Auditory processing disorders can be classified into five types, and some people experience different types at the same time. They are:
- Tolerance Fading Memory: Instructions need to be repeated and are easily distracted
- Decoding: When they hear sounds but do not recognize them as words
- Integration: Struggles with multi-tasking (hear and see) like writing notes and listening
- Prosodic: Listening and thinking are both difficult because of inefficiency in processing
- Organizational: Difficulty recalling information in a specific order and coping with noise
